Who let the blogs out!? #5

by Nick on March 24, 2012

Miss me yet?  No!?!  Wow – how embarrassing… So this is a really fun Who let the blogs out?! for me – the first I’m publishing after the switch from Blogger to WordPress.  So far I’m pretty happy with the move.  I had some “comment” issues, which you’ll notice on some older posts (apparently the comment software I was using isn’t very “happy” with the transition.   Most, if not all, of the older comments are back now but they moved my replies to the end instead of right below each comment like they are with all of the new posts.)

Also, my subscription setting have been a bit cranky so if you haven’t been seeing updates from me, you might want to try resubscribing using the buttons on the top of the right sidebar.  This is also a good time to shamelessly promote my RSS feed.  I’m hoping to build up a solid group of subscribers, so if you haven’t subscribed yet and can stand getting these post a few times a week in your reader, please subscribe, ok?  Pretty please :)

How are you enjoying the new layout?  A bit busy, right?  All in all, I like it.  It’s much easier to figure out than blogger – which I can’t believe because I was on blogger for almost two years!  I also have a top secret blogger bud who is playing around with a new, bold (READ: Obnoxious) banner to replace the blurry one ^^^ up there ^^^.  Once that’s done I’ll hold a vote (assuming I can figure out how to hold a vote…) and winner takes all (tie goes to the new design too).  So that’s something to look forward to.  By the way, when someone says “I want to design something really loud and obnoxious, you know, to be more consistent with your writing style,” should I be offended, haha!  (In case you’re wondering, I was not offended.  I thought “wow, somebody gets me.”  :)

OK – time for a few of my favorite posts for the week.  Make sure to “like” and “tweet” the crap out of this roundup to spread the word about some fancy pants posts from around the “Internets!”  With the move, I’m playing a bit of catch up and may have missed a “shout out” or two, so if I did, shoot it over and I’ll link it here.

The end of buy and hold? (via @moneysma) // as you’ll see in the comments, I’m more of a “buy and buy more” guy… but I like to sell losers to effectively buy other funds I believe in at a discount after the tax deduction for the loss…

Who let my blog out?!

In addition to highlighting some of my favorite posts I try and troll the net when I’m bored.  Every once in a while I find people who give Step Away from the Mall a shout out on their sites either in round-ups, posts or carnivals.  Again, I’m sure I miss some so let me know if I missed you and I’ll include you next week, cool?

So thank you to all of these kind, generous and attractive people who let my blog out this week or so – because of the migration I wasn’t able to do my regular roundup last week…)!

I’m really liking it, Thad. The site is quite a bit easier to use and quicker, which are both great things for me as a tech moron… I’m still learning a few things, but it’s getting easier and easier.

Thanks so much for the shout out. It looks like things are working well after the change-over, or at least it looks that way from my perspective. Who knows how the admin is working for you. I’ve only every been on a self-hosted wordpress, so I don’t have anything to compare to. Thanks again.

No problem – yep, it’s been great so far. I’ll still be tweaking it as I go, but I’m getting pretty comfortable with the new setup.

Looking forward to seeing the new logo/banner. Also good to hear that you managed to recover the old comments. Things should go a lot smoother now that you’re on wordpress. Also, thanks for including Modest Money in this round up!

Yeah, I’m pretty excited too. I’m a big fan of bold and obnoxious, so I’m sure I’ll like it… haha. And no problem at all, Jeremy!

May I ask why you switched from blogger to wordpress?

Sure. When I first started blogging I used blogger because I had gmail accounts and it was just easier. All I cared about was writing posts, so I grabbed a “theme” and just started typing. It was really easy to set up. (If you look in the wayback machine, you’ll see how ugly it was!). Then as people starting sticking around and I wanted to add features like more robust commenting features and side bar content I found myself trying to hunt around the net for “how to ____ using blogger” and then copy and paste html code into my theme. Most of the time it worked, but there were often a few features that just wouldn’t look right or didn’t exactly work properly. With wordpress it seems like there’s a “plugin” or “widget” that lets me do everything I need.

It’s sort of like iPhone v. Droid (warning – this is coming from a tech moron). Wordpress has way more “apps” and is pretty easy to use right out of the box. Blogger is like having a Droid. There are a ton of “apps” (i.e. gadgets/widgets) but you often need to tweak things a bit as you go and/or do things that aren’t exactly what you want to design/modify things.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any specific follow-up questions. I’m sure other bloggers around here can help, too!
